Rec Fishing Under Threat - Tom - January 2010 To all my fellow "fisho's":
I don't live in Australia (yet) but have fished out of Adelaide and Darwin and visit Australia on a regular basis (I am married to a wonderful Aussie gal). I love to fish your waters, spending time on your beautiful oceans and making friends fishing.
I currently live in Southern California were a mockery of our political process has just taken place. Recently, we too have been under attack by the "kelp huggers" in our area. These individuals are determined to eleminate recreational fishing, by hook or crook. They love to bend the facts, give fish human characteristics (like saying the off spring suffers watching the parents being fished or to refer to fish as "Sea Puppies"), etc.
Here in Californina this movement is called the MLPA (Marine Life Protection Act) and is currently costing us our fishing grounds, costing us jobs, and adding an addition cost to our already streached government budget.
Please join all the groups or organizations that you can to stop this attack on your/our joy of fishing. 99% of the individuals that I fish with already pratice responsible fishing including catch and release when it is requried or appropiate.
We want our kids to enjoy this past time and know that irresponsible or illegal fishing is not the way to make this happen. Do not stand by and think that someone else will protect this gift we have, they won't. It is up to you to fight for and keep fishing alive and open for us and for our kids. I want to encourage you to join those groups that can petition your government and support them with your time and money.
Wishing you all tight lines and bent rods,
Tom Callaghan
