To quote 'Bargy' - "One of the most effective ways to catch fish is trolling".
We had a couple of runs up and down adjacent to the Lucinda jetty, which is famous for its resident population of large fish. The problem with this is the structure around the pylons - hooked fish go straight back in there and the attrition rate of lures was running pretty high.
Bargy decided to even the score by introducing some 'elephant gun' gear into the equation. "Bring it on!" says 'Bargy'. With a reel capable of upwards of 30kg of drag pressure, 'Bargy' was pulled off his feet.
Welcome on Board Alex
Offshore Productions (The Fishing DVD) is happy to welcome aboard Alex Harris as a part of the crew. Alex has 15 years experience with commercial camera work and post production. As The Fishing DVD is expanding, it will be great to have Alex share John's work load.
After a couple of hectic weeks for Alex and John - sorting out shoots and schedules, learning new software, and becoming familiar with the editing suite and procedures - it was time to take a morning off and do a bit of fishing. No camera allowed.
Alex hails from South Australia, where he spent his off hours chasing their monster snapper, jew and King George whiting. John wanted to introduce Alex to some of Queensland's blue water pelagics like wahoo and mackerel. The idea was to do a quick trip, fill the ice box with some nice fillets for the rest of the crew and families, then back to work. John started the proceedings with a nice wahoo, then turned the boat around giving Alex the rod for a second run. Enter one fired up black marlin!

John then introduced Alex to his favourite past time - phoning the office while we are stuck behind computers and deadlines, and placing the phone inches away from a screaming reel. "You guys should be here, ha ha ha..."
An hour and a half's fight on a very small Daiwa Saltist 30 and an F18 Bluewater Classic lure produced this nice marlin. Unfortunately the fish became tail wrapped in the very final stages of the fight, and drowned. Not the outcome we were planning on at all. However it won't be wasted as we have lots of family and friends who were very happy to have some fresh fish. Sorry about the picture quality, the shots were taken with Alex's phone! We did say we went without a camera, a sure fire way to get a good days fishing!! I did ask Alex if he'd like to catch another... he politely declined!

We have to say that the mackerel gear we were using really stood up and gave a good account of itself. This the same reel and lure we used to shoot the mackerel story in WA. It landed 12 mackerel up to 12kg, the wahoo John is holding, then this marlin. The only thing it needs is the line pulled off and wound back on again PROPERLY! Alex got a bit excited towards the end (or ran out of strength) and wound all the line to one side. We thought we would put this photo in after the phone call we had! :)
